Join Sufi scholar Kabir Helminski and Buddhist scholar Nicholas Egan as we travel to Iran, one of the great ancient civilizations of the Middle East. Here we will seek to find common ground between East and West, and explore our differences by comparing and contrasting Buddhist and Islamic religions. We will also discover more about the ancient Zoroastrians whose influence is still felt throughout Iran.
With the help of our scholars, we will investigate the notion of what it means to be Muslim and Buddhist, and how these two great religions can find common ground in their respective traditions and in the mystical poetry. Iran is home to the largest population of Sufis in the Middle East. We will learn firsthand about the Sufi tradition, renowned for its insight, devotion, and beautiful wisdom poetry.
Join us for this unique interfaith dialogue in which we will discuss such as the nature fo the divine, the path of practice, and the possibility of both inner and outer peace.
The journey begins in Tehran, takes us to the town of Mahan that was once the home of the famous Sufi poet Shah Nematollah Vali, and on to Shiraz, known for the famous tomb of the ninth-century martyr Shah Cheragh. A highlight of any trip to Iran is a visit to Persepolis, whcih was once the ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire and to this day remains one of the the most impressive archaeological sites in the world. In Yazd, we will spend time at the Fire Temple of the Zoroastrians before driving to Isfahan, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
